仮定法過去[現在の事実に反する仮定]

If I had enough time, I would visit him.もし時間があったら彼を訪ねるのだが。
If I were a bird, I could fly to you. もし私が鳥だったらあなたのところへ飛んで行けるのに。
If he were here, he would help me with my homework. もし彼がここにいたら私の仕事を手伝ってくれるのに。
If I were you, I would not buy this car. 私はあなただったらこの車を買わない。
If you were in my place, what would you do? もし君が僕の立場ならどうするだろう？
If I knew her address, I would write to her. 彼女の住所を知っていたら手紙を書くのに。
If you went out now, you’d be scolded. もし今外出したら叱られるよ。
If we didn’t work, we wouldn’t have any money. 働かなければ我々は無一文になる。

仮定法過去完了[過去の事実に反する仮定]

If I had had an umbrella, I would have lent it to the girl. 傘を持っていたらその女の子に貸していたのに。
If he had left earlier, he could have avoided the evening rush hour. 彼はもっと早く出発していたら夕方のラッシュアワーを避けられたのに。
I could’ve taken some pictures if I’d brought my camera. もしカメラを持ってきていたら写真を撮れたのに。
I could have rescued the child if I had been able to swim. 私が泳げたらその子を助けられたのに。
If we had known the correct distance, we might have taken a taxi. もし正確な距離を知っていたら我々はタクシーを使ったかもしれない。
If he had taken their advice, he would be success now. 彼がもし彼らのアドバイスに従っていたら今頃は成功しているのに。

未来についての仮定

If it should rain tomorrow, the picnic will [would] be put off. 万一明日雨が降ったらピクニックは延期される。
If he should lose his job, what will [would] become of his family? 万一彼が失業したら家族はどうなるだろう。
If these biscuits should arrive in damaged condition, please inform the factory at once. 万一このビスケットに不都合がございましたら直ちに当工場までお知らせください。
What would you do if a war were to break out? 仮に戦争が起きたとしたらあなたならをどうしますか。
If the sun were to rise in the west, I would never break my promise. たとえ太陽が西から昇っても私は約束を破らない。

Ifを使わない場合

Were I healthy, how happy I would be! もし健康だったらどんなに幸せか。
Had I realized it was today’s paper, I would not have thrown it away. それが今日の新聞だと気づいていたら捨てなかったのに。
Should his condition get worse, call the doctor immediately. 万一彼の容体が悪化したらすぐ医者を呼びなさい。

[主語に仮定が含まれている場合]

A true friend wouldn’t desert you. 本当の友達ならあなたを見捨てない。
A careful reader would notice the trick. 注意深い読者ならそのトリックに気づくだろう。
This medicine might have saved his life. この薬を飲んでいたら彼の命は助かったかもしれない。

[副詞（句）に仮定が含まれている場合]

With a little more money, I could have bought it. もう少しお金があったらそれを買えたのに。
In different circumstances, I would have said yes. 事情が違えばイエスと言ったのに。
It would be possible now, but it was quite impossible in those days. 今ならそれができるが、当時は全く不可能だった。
He did his best; otherwise he would not have succeeded. 彼は全力を尽くしたが、そうでなければ成功していなかった。
Another step, and you would’ve been run over by a truck. もう一歩踏み出していたらトラックに轢かれていた。

[不定詞・分詞などに仮定が含まれている場合]

To see her play, you would take her for a boy. 彼女がプレーするのを見たら男の子だと思うだろう。
It would be advisable to make a backup of the data. データの控えを作成しておいたほうがよい。
Given the chance, she could have succeeded. 機会を与えられていたら彼女は成功していたのに。
Suppose [Supposing] you were alone on a desert island, how would you get food? 無人島で一人でいたらどうやって食料を手に入れますか。

[願望を表す場合]

I wish I had a younger sister. 妹がいたらなあ。
I wish I could speak English as fluently as you. あなたくらい流暢に英語が話せたらなあ。
We wish there were no earthquakes in Japan. 日本に地震がなければいいのに。
She wishes she had her own room. 彼女は自分だけの部屋があればいいと思っている。
I wish you had told me the news before. 前もってそのニュースを知らせたくれたらよかったのに。
I wish he had been with me then. あのとき彼がいてくれたらよかったのに。

[意見・想像を表す場合]

No other person could solve the mystery. 他の人なら誰もその謎を解けないだろう。
Things might not be so bad as they seem. 事態は見かけほど悪くないかもしれない。
She would have done anything to save her son. 彼女は息子を救うためならどんなことでもしただろう。
Nobody could have foreseen such a result. そのような結果は誰も予想できなかっただろう。

[丁寧な表現]

I would advise you to do as you are told. （もし助言が許されるなら）言われた通りにするのがよいでしょう。
Would you mind carrying my suitcase? スーツケースを運んでいただけないでしょうか。
Could I have the menu, please? メニューを見せていただけますか。
Might I trouble you for a match? すみませんがマッチを貸してもらえませんか。
She is an American, I should say. （私の意見を申し上げるとすれば）彼女はアメリカ人でしょう。（英）

仮定法現在

[that節内に動詞の原形を用いる場合]

It was necessary that he leave at once. 彼は直ちに出発する必要があった。
I proposed that the prize be given to him. 私はその賞を彼に与えるように提案した。
I request that she go alone. 私は彼女が一人で行くように求める。
I request that she not go alone. 私は彼女が一人で行かないように求める。
He ordered that the goods (should) be sent by air. 彼はこの商品を航空便で送るように命じた。
It is important that you (should) do your best. 君が全力を尽くすことが大切だ。
