接続詞

Ⅰ （等位接続詞）1（1） ［前の語・句・節と反対または対照する語・句・節を導いて］.He’s poor but happy. 彼は貧しいが幸せだ.I didn’t go, but he did. 私は行かなかったが彼は行った.

（2） ［（it is） true, of course, indeed, may などを持つ節のあとに用いて, 譲歩の意味を表わして］ You may not believe it, but it’s true. それを信じないかもしれないが本当なのだ.

2 not A but B で「AではなくBである」の意を表わす表現； Bが先にくる時は B and not A となる.It’s not that I disliked the work, but I have no time. その仕事が嫌いなわけではなく時間がないのだ （注that は because の意味）.

Ⅱ （従位接続詞）1 …のほかに（は）, …を除いて（は）前置詞からの転用で, 用例中の he, she を それぞれ him, her とすれば, but は前置詞となるAll but he ［him］ are present. 彼のほかは皆出席している.

2 ［否定文のあとで］［しばしば ～ that で否定の主節に対して条件節を導いて］ …しないなら, …でなければ（1） 前から訳すと「（…すれば）必ず…（する）」になる （2） but の節中の動詞は直説法It never rains but it pours. 《諺》 降れば必ずどしゃ降り； 不幸［物事］は重なるもの, 「二度あることは三度」 （注通例悪い時に用いるが, よい時にも用いる）.Scarcely a day passed but I met her. 彼女に会わない日はほとんど1日もなかった （比較 Hardly a day passed without my meeting her. のほうが一般的）.

副詞

ただ, ほんの, …だけHe’s but a child. 彼はほんの子供にすぎない.

前置詞

［no one, nobody, none, nothing, anything や all, every one, また who などの疑問詞などのあとに用いて］ …のほかに［の］, …を除いて［た］ （except）All but him were drowned. 彼以外は皆溺死（できし）した.I

all but…ほとんどShe was all but nude. 彼女はほとんど裸同然だった. but for……がなければ； …がなかったならBut for your help, I could not have done it. あなたの援助がなければ［なかったら］, 私はそれをすることができなかったでしょう.do nothing but do……するばかりであるShe did nothing but complain. 彼女は不平を言うばかりだった.have no （other） choice but to do…せざるをえないI had no choice but to accept the offer. その申し込みを引き受けるほか仕方がなかった.

関係代名詞

［否定の不定代名詞または no＋名詞を先行詞とする関係代名詞として］ 《古》 …でない（もの, 人）There is no one but knows it. それを知らない者はない.
