2011

(1)　楽しいはずの海外旅行にもトラブルはつきものだ。たとえば、悪天候や自然災害によって飛行機が欠航し、海外での滞在を延ばさせなければならないことはさほど珍しいことではない。いかなる場合でも重要なのは、冷静に状況を判断し、当該地域についての知識や情報、さらに外国語運用能力を駆使しながら、目の前の問題を解決しようとする態度である。

Expectant tourists from abroad are often involved in trouble. Bad weather or a natural disaster sometimes forces flight cancellations, delaying their departures. Whatever may happen, they must judge conditions rightly and attempt to solve their urgent matters with knowledge and information about the area and command of foreign languages.

(2)　人と話していて、音楽でも映画でも何でもいいが、何かが好きだと打ち明けると、たいていはすぐさま、ではいちばんのお気に入りは何か、ときかれることになる。この問いは、真剣に答えようとすれば、かなり悩ましいものになりうる。いやしくも映画なり音楽なりの愛好家である以上、お気に入りの候補など相当数あるはずであり、その中から一つをとるには、残りのすべてを捨てねばならない。

“What’s your favorite?” If you tell someone that you like music or movies, they will ask you the question. Answering the question seriously can perplex you. You must select only one from among a considerable number of works you like and abandon all of the rest.

(1)　人間の性格は見かけよりも複雑なので、相手のことが完全に分かることなどあるはずがない。とは言うものの、初対面の人物とほんの少し言葉を交わしただけで、その人とまるで何十年も前からつきあいがあったかのような錯覚に陥ることがある。こうしたある種の誤解が、時として長い友情のきっかけになったりもする。

Human character is so unexpectedly complex that there is no knowing others perfectly. However, only if we have a short conversation with a stranger, we may feel as if we had known each other for decades. This kind of illusion can cause a long friendship.

(2)　私の意見では、現代の若者は性別を問わず自分で調理できることが大切である。料理をおいしく仕上げるためには豊かな想像力や手先の器用さが要求されるので、心身の健康にとても良い。食材に意識的になれば自然への関心も高まる。さらに、料理で友人をもてなすことができると、あるいは人と共同して料理ができると、絆が深まることは間違いない。

In my view, young people today, regardless of sex, should cook by themselves. Cooking is good for the physical and mental health because a good cook needs a rich imagination and manual dexterity. The awareness of ingredients develops the concern about nature. It is no doubt that, if we can entertain our friends by cooking or cook together, our bonds will be stronger.

(1)　今日、睡眠不足は見過ごせない問題となっている。原因の一つは、社会全体が深夜も多くの人が起きていることを想定して働いていることである。照明器具の発達も、我々の体内時計を狂わせているのかもしれない。その一方で、多くの学校や会社の始まる時間は変わっていない。こうして睡眠不足がうまれやすくなり、日中の集中力低下を引き起こすのだ。

Today, sleep deprivation is a serious problem. One of the causes is that our society as a whole works assuming that many people sit up late at night. Our biological clocks may not work well because of the development of lighting apparatus. Nevertheless many schools and companies start at the same time as before. These make us short of sleep and less concentrated on everyday activities.

(2)　南半球を旅行していた時に、見慣れない星々が奇妙な形を夜空に描いているのを目にした。こうした星座のなかには、航海に必要な器具や熱帯に住む動物の名前が付けられたものがある。星座の名前の由来について、私には正確な知識がないが、何百年か前の船乗りたちが何を大切にし、何に驚いていたのか、その一端がうかがわれる。

While traveling in the Southern Hemisphere, I saw unfamiliar stars in strange-looking formations in the night sky. Some of the constellations were named after apparatus necessary for navigation and tropical animals. Though I am not sure about where those names derived from, I can tell somewhat what sailors hundreds of years ago valued and wondered at.

(1) 近年、電子書籍の普及が急速に進んできた。アメリカほどではないが、日本でも、パソコンや耳慣れない機器で文章を読む機会は増える一方である。しかし、中高年層に限らず、紙の本でないとどうも読んだ気がしないという人も多い。論文でも小説でも普通にコンピュータで執筆される時代だけれども、きちんと製本された真新しい本には、何とも言えない味わいがあるらしい。

With the recent rapid widespread of electronic books, not only in the U.S. but also in Japan, people have more and more chances to read on computers and unfamiliar devices. But many, especially the middle-age and older, are not satisfied with the unconventional books. Though it is usual to write a paper or a novel now with a computer, new paper books probably have attractions we cannot express.

(2)　きのう通勤帰りの満員電車で揺られていたら、小学生ぐらいの男の子が大きな声を張り上げて車内の人込みをかき分けて走ってきた。子供は頬を真っ赤に染めて、「運転手さん、さっきの駅で降ろしてください」と叫んでいた。そしてたちまちのうちに私の目の前から姿を消した。忘れ物でもしたのだろうか？だとしたら、あの必死の形相からして、よほど大事なものだったに違いない。

Yesterday, on the crowded train home, I saw a schoolboy come screaming and running through the crowd. He was crying with his cheeks red, “Stop it! Let me get off at the last station!” and soon disappeared. I wondered if he had left something behind. Then, from his desperate look, it must have been very important.

(1)  花子：　昨日の夕刊見た？絶滅の危機に瀕していたトキの雛が孵ったと書いてあったわ。

Did you read yesterday’s newspaper? It said that one of the endangered Toki had hatched.

太郎： 飼育係の人はさぞかし大変だったろうね。

The keepers must have worked hard.

花子： でも、この雛は自然に戻されたトキから生まれたのよ。

But the baby bird was born from a Toki returned into nature.

太郎： トキが住みやすい環境、つまり、きれいな水や空気があり、珍しい鳥だからと追いかけ回されたりしない場所というのは、僕たち人間にとっても居心地のよいものなのかもしれないね。

The environment where they live comfortably, the place with clean water and air and without being run after because of their rarity may be also comfortable for us.

(2) 世界には文字を持たない言語がたくさんあるらしい。毎日文字に囲まれて暮らしている私たちからすれば、さぞ不便なことだろうと思ってしまいがちだ。しかし、文字があろうがなかろうが、ことばの基本的な働きに変わりはない。文字のある言語のほうがない言語より優れているなどと考えるのは、とんでもない思い上がりだろう。

It is said that a lot of languages don’t have letters or characters in the world. Since we are surrounded by them every day, we tend to find it inconvenient. However, whether we have a writing system or not, the basic function of language is almost the same. It is a really arrogant idea that a language with a writing system is superior to one without.
