2006

(1) ものの見方や好みは人さまざまである。たとえば、駅前のハンバーガー店は、人々にとってどのような意味を持つだろうか。多くの人にとっては、ハンバーガーを味わう場であろう。しかし、肉が苦手な私にとっては、ハンバーガーを楽しむというよりは、仕事帰りにちょっと立ち寄り、コーヒー一杯で一日の疲れをいやす、くつろぎの場である。本を持ち込み、書斎代わりに使うことも少なくない。

Different people have different views and tastes. What does a hamburger shop near a station, for example, mean to people? It is probably a place to enjoy hamburgers for many people. As for me, however, as I don’t like meat, it is not so much a place to do so as a relaxation place to drop in after work in order to have a cup of coffee which relieves fatigue. I frequently bring books and use it as my study.

(2) 子供の頃にわたしが毎週欠かさず見たあるテレビ番組があった。その主役がどこにでもいそうな犬で、そいつがある町にふらりとやってきては、そこで起こった事件の解決に協力し、人間からほめられる前に姿を消して、また次の町に向かって旅をつづけるのだ。わたしをとりこにしたのは、一つの場所に安住せずに、たえず動きつづける、その姿だったに違いない。

As a child, I watched a TV program every week. The main character, an ordinary dog, dropped in at a town and helped to solve a case there. Disappearing before a person would praise him, he went on traveling to the next town. He attracted me because he was moving all the time without settling down.

2007

(1) 教育とは何かを考えるときに、私が決まって思い出すのが小学校の恩師の顔である。先生は、私たち生徒に、物事に真剣に取り組むことを教えてくださった。その教えは、これまでの私の人生の指針となっている。今から考えると、先生の教えが私の心に響いたのは、先生の尊敬できる誠実な人柄によるところが大きかったように思う。教育において考慮すべきことは、教える内容だけではなく、教える側の人間性でもあるのだ。

I am reminded of my favorite elementary school teacher whenever I think about what education is. He advised us to take everything seriously. His advice has been my guide. Looking back, I am sure that it inspired me mainly because of his respectable and sincere character. What to think about education is not only what to teach but what the teachers should be like.

(2) 最近久しぶりに旅行して実感したんですが、田舎の夜空には星が驚くほどたくさん見えます。科学的に考えれば、汚染がなく空気がきれいだからでしょうが、風景はそれを見る者の心を映すとよく言われます。雑事に追われて忙しいだけの生活からしばしの逃避行を敢行したあの時の私は、もしかしたら、めずらしく無邪気な子供のように心が澄んでいたのかもしれません。

I realized we can see an amazing number of stars in the country when I traveled recently after a long time. Science will say this is because the air is clean and unpolluted. They say a landscape reflects the viewer’s state of mind. My mind may have been unusually pure like an innocent child’s since I (took the plunge and) momentarily escaped from my hectic life.

2008

(1) 子供のころに、本を読んで感動したり、わくわくしたりした思い出は、一生消えることのないほど強烈なものである。子供は未知の世界に対し新鮮な好奇心を持ち、想像力が豊かであるため、本の世界のなかで生きることができるのだ。成長してさまざまな試練に出会ったときに、そのような経験が思わぬ力を発揮する場合がある。

We remember that we were moved and thrilled by (reading) books in our childhood. Such memories are so vivid that they will never fade away. Children have a natural curiosity about the strange world (around them) and are imaginative. This is why they can live in the fictional world. When they grow to face various challenges, such experiences can help them unexpectedly.

(2) コンクリートの建物に囲まれ、機能第一主義の無機質な都会で生活していると、鳥や虫の鳴き声に耳をすませたり、名も知らぬような草木に目をやったりしながら、季節の微妙な移り変わりを実感することがめっきり少なくなってきたように思う。もっと心に余裕を持ち、一回きりのかけがえのない人生をうるおいのあるものにしたいと考えて、田舎に移住することを決断する人が近年増えてきているのも無理からぬことである。

City dwellers surrounded by concrete buildings lead a monotonous life, giving top priority to functions. They rarely realize the faint seasonal transition by listening to birds and insects singing, or enjoying looking at nameless plants. It is reasonable that more and more people decide to migrate to the country in the hope of feeling relaxed and enriching their one and only life.

2009

(1) 冗談を言う人間は低俗な奴と顰蹙を買うことがある。しかし、人間関係における一種の潤滑油としてのユーモアの効用については、もっと認識されて良いのではないだろうか。ユーモアのわかる人間となるためには、幅広い知識と柔軟な思考法、それに豊かな感受性が必要だ。ユーモアのセンスがあると言われることは、最高の褒め言葉である。

Jokers are occasionally considered as vulgar and frowned at. However, we should make much more recognition of the good effect of humor which smoothes our relationships with others. We need a wide range of knowledge, flexible mind, and great sensitivity in order to have a good sense of humor “You have a sense of humor” is the best compliment.

(2) 我が家の古いピアノには懐かしい思い出がたくさん詰まっている。5歳からピアノを始めた娘たちもすっかり大人になり、今やだれも弾かなくなった。しかし、なかなか処分する気になれない。そういうピアノを買い取って再生させる会社があるらしい。プロの手で修理すれば、また美しい音を奏でることができるという。

Our old piano is filled with happy memories. Having grown up, my daughters no longer play the piano, though they began playing it at the age of five. Still, I don’t feel like disposing of it. I hear that some companies buy and revive such pianos. They say that repairs by professionals enable them to play beautiful melodies again.

2010

(1)　子供のころには列車での旅行というのは心躍るものであった。年に一度、夏休みに祖父母の家に行くときには、何時間も列車に乗ると考えただけでわくわくした。今では長距離列車を見ても、子供のころのように気分が高まることはないが、大きな駅のホームに日本各地に向かうさまざまな列車が並んでいる光景は鮮明に覚えているし、発車の瞬間の独特の高揚感を思い出すこともある。

When I was a child, it was an exciting experience to travel by train.Every summer, I went to see my grandparents and just at the thought of riding on a train for hours, I got excited. Now I do not get so excited to see long-distance trains as I did when I was a child, but I clearly remember seeing in a big railway station various trains headed for various places in Japan, and that peculiar excitement I always felt at the moment when my train left the station.

(2) 私たちは漠然と犬やイルカを賢いと思っているが、動物の賢さを測る客観的な基準に基づいてそう判断しているわけではない。そういった動物の場合、人間の命によく従うほど、頭が良いように見えるだけではないだろうか。人間の場合には種々のいわゆる客観テストなるものがあるが、それも結局、出題者の指示によく従うことが高得点に結びついてるのかもしれない。

We sometimes assume that dogs or dolphines are smart, but not on the basis of an objective standard for judging animal intelligence. Isn’t it just that the more an animal obeys the commands of human beings, the smarter they appear to us. We judge human intelligence using ‘objective’ tests, but after all, it may be that it is those who best follow the directions of the examiniers that get high marks.
