1996

(1) ワープロやパソコンが普及したおかげで、「書く」という行為はすっかり様変わりして、たとえば「筆をとる」といった言葉も死語になりつつある。そうはいっても、ペンを紙の上にさらさらと走らせていくときのあの心地よさは、なかなか捨てがたいものがある。

With the widespread use of word processer and personal computer, the act of writing has remarkably changed: fewer and fewer people say “pick up a pen.” Even so, while running a pen over the paper I feel so comfortable that I cannot easily quit it.

(2) 私の子供時代には、学校から帰ると外で暗くなるまで近所の子供たちと遊ぶのが普通だった。いっしょにいたずらをして怒られたり、仲たがいをしてなぐり合いのけんかもしたが、そうすることで他人とのつき合い方を学んだ。家でテレビゲームばかりしている現在の子供たちを見ていると、なぜいじめがあるのかわかるような気がする。

When I was a child, after school, children would often play outdoors with neighboring friends until dark. We were scolded for mischief and fought like cats and dogs, but we learned how to get along with others. Seeing children of today absorbed in video games at home, I can figure out why bullying is often done.

1997

(1) パリの空港で、トランクに腰掛けた一人の男が、ぼんやりと頬づえをついていた。私が「どうかなさいましたか、どこかお加減でも悪いんですか」と聞くと、「いや、いま遠くから着いたところなんですけどね、身体は着いても、心がまだなので、こころの到着を待っているところです」という答がかえってきた。

At the airport in Paris, there was a man sitting his trunk, resting his cheek on one hand absent-mindedly. I asked him, “What’s the matter? Is there anything wrong?” He answered: “No. I’ve just arrived here from far away. My body is here, but my mind hasn’t arrived yet. So I’m waiting for my mind to get here.”

(2) 客を招いたら、まず住居のすべての部屋を案内してまわるのが、欧米の通例である。ドイツの友人宅でも、寝室から地下の作業室兼物置に至るまで案内されたが、どの部屋も清潔で整然としているのに圧倒された。以前その夫妻をわが家に招いたおり、もっぱら座敷に閉じ込め、他の部屋など見せるどころではなかったのだが、今思うとはずかしい気がする。

In Western countries, people usually show a guest around all of their rooms as soon as their guest comes. When I visited a friend of mine in Germany, he showed me everywhere from the bedroom to the workshop and storeroom in the basement. I was astonished to see all the rooms clean and tidy. Inviting the couple to my house before, I confined them to the guest room instead of showing them around. I am now embarrassed by the memory.

(1) 「受賞おめでとうございます。どうして映画監督になりたいと思ったのか、少しお聞かせいただけますか。」「そうですね。ちょっと答えづらいのですが、7歳のときにキャメラを買ってもらって、それがきっかけで、映像のおもしろさに気づき始めたんだと思います。映画館をやっている叔父がいたのも、映画的環境に慣れ親しむ一因だったと思います。

“Congratulations on winning the prize! I’d appreciate it if you would tell me what made you decide to become a film director.”“Well, it’s a tough question. When I was seven, I was bought a camera and it got me interested in pictures. I had an uncle running a movie theater, which also familiarized me with the movie world.”

(2) 野球は、アメリカの国民的スポーツのひとつである。多くのアメリカ人は、子供の頃、近所の野原で野球をして大きくなる。泥まみれになり、隣の誰それさんは自分より上手になったとか、ならないとかいいながら、他人と共同生活を送っていくすべを身につけていく。あるいは他人に打ち負かされるという屈辱感を受け入れる訓練を重ねていく。

Baseball is a national sport of the United States. Many American children grow up playing baseball in open fields. Covered with mud, they learn how to get along with others, talking about someone who has become better or not. Also, they are repeatedly trained to accept the humiliation of being beaten.

1999

(1) 外国に住んでみると、「人間、みな同じ」との感想をもつ。イギリス人とつき合ってみても確かにそう思えてくる。彼らが悲しみや喜びに反応する様や相手の立場を考える点はいかにも日本人に似ている。恥ずかしがりやで、すぐには友人にはなれないが、いったん友人になれば驚くほど互いに心の琴線に触れ合うことができる。

When living abroad, we may have the impression that people are the same everywhere. Being in company with British people, we will feel the same way. British and Japanese people are similar because we react to joy and sorrow in the similar way and we put ourselves into others’ shoes. They are so shy that it is not easy to make friends with them. But, once we have become friends, we surprisingly come to sympathize with each other.

(2) 早起きは苦手という人が多いようだ。私も夜ふかしは平気だが、早起きはとてもつらい。ただ、所用で早く起きる日は気分が一新する。ほほを打つ朝の大気は優しく快い。一日がことさら長く、充実した時間を過ごした実感がある。よし、明日からはと心に決めるのだが、翌朝になるとその決心はにぶってしまう。

It seems that many people can’t get up early. For me, it is easy to stay up late but really hard to rise early. However, I feel refreshed when I have to get up early for business trips. Fresh air feels tender and comfortable on my cheeks. I realize that I have had a longer, fulfilling day. I tell myself to wake up early from tomorrow on, but my resolution weakens the next morning.

2000

(1) あるとき私は幼児期を過ごした町を通る機会に恵まれた。記憶のなかの光景をたぐりよせながら、なんとかそれらしい場所まで来たが、自信がない。周囲の町並みは完全に変わってしまっていた。そこに建っていた家はいかにも新しく、30年前からそこにあったものとはとても思えなかった。

I had a chance to visit the town where I lived in my childhood. I probably managed to reach my old neighborhood, recalling the scenes in my memory. But I was no sure. The surrounding streets had completely changed. The houses standing there looked so new that they must not have been there thirty years before.

(2) 「コンピュータは間違えません」という決まり文句があるが、それは要するに扱う人間の側が間違えることが多いということだ。相手が人間の場合、「あ、ここはこうするつもりが間違えたんだな」と推察してくれるかもしれないが、コンピュータはなかなかそうはいかない。コンピュータを疑う前にまず自分を疑え、特に初心者はこれを肝に銘じておいたほうがいいだろう。

It is commonly said that computers never make mistakes, which really means that their human operators often do. When dealing with a human being, he or she may suppose that you made a careless mistake. However, you cannot expect a computer to do so. Computer users, particularly beginners, should bear in mind “Suspect yourself before you suspect the computer.”
